Open position: Graphic Designer
The firm
Miko McGinty Inc. is a graphic design studio in Brooklyn that works with major artists, museums,
and publishers across the country to design and produce art books, identities, exhibition graphics and catalogues, and printed ephemera. We are a dedicated team working to the highest standards in a supportive, small office. Our work is structured by our deep understanding of and commitment to artists, museum professionals, and scholars as they enrich culture and preserve knowledge.
The position
The graphic designer is responsible for the design, project management, and production coordination of illustrated books, exhibition and event graphics. The designer will learn best practices and gain expertise in arts- and museum-focused design while working closely with all members of the office to ease workflow and contribute to team projects.
Flexibility, attention to detail, clear communication, thoughtfulness, and enthusiasm in partnership with colleagues and clients are key, as well as a learning mindset.
This position is screen and desk-intensive. They will split their time between design (80%), client and collaborator engagement (10%), and team engagement and support (10%).
Our woman-owned firm is naturally collaborative due to its small size and long-standing relationships with well-known artists, major museums, and publishers.
Qualifications
Print design and typesetting experience required. Knowledge of editorial conventions is helpful. Candidates must exhibit a strong work ethic and be able to work independently as well as collaboratively. An interest in museums, contemporary art, and art history is important.
Requirements
- BA degree including coursework in graphic design
- At least 3–5 years of work experience in the design field.
- Portfolio demonstrating typographic sensitivity and attention to detail
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to meet deadlines
- Expertise in InDesign, facility with Adobe Suite
- Experience with print production workflows and knowledge of color management and prepress processes are preferred.
Responsibilities include:
DESIGN WORK (80%)
Prioritize and balance design work, time management, and project communication in relationship to the overall success of the office and client retention.
Project Management
- Maintain internal office project status sheets with schedule, content, budget, specification, and vendor information
- Plan, maintain and abide by schedules and deadlines
- Track hours per project
- Estimate costs for exhibition graphics and publications and keep track of overall expenditures as parameters change, compiling a final costs summary at the end
- Coordinate outside resources: editors, proofreaders, indexers, prepress, printers, vendors
Design of exhibitions, publications, identities, ephemera, and more
- Discuss project goals and parameters with supervisor before design work begins
- Attend client meetings, become informed on topic
- Design multiple sample options, revising as needed based on internal and client feedback
- Lay out complete publications, typeset and design full exhibition graphics suites
- Produce multiple rounds of editorial and layout / design passes working closely with supervisors and clients until final approval
Production
- Oversee color proofing, material choices, and press checks
- Send final files correctly prepared to prepress, printers, and manufacturers
- Oversee final production and coordinate shipping
CLIENT + COLLABORATOR ENGAGEMENT (10%)
- Communicate respectfully and in a timely fashion
- Prepare for and attend meetings: kickoffs, design presentations, follow-through/feedback
- Establish and maintain good working partnerships with collaborators and vendors
- Support client relationships by attending exhibition and publication-related events
- Contribute to office website maintenance yearly and participate in monthly office instagram planning
TEAM ENGAGEMENT + SUPPORT (10%)
- Uphold and contribute to workplace culture of empathy, respect, clear communication, and focused attention
- Provide assistance to other team members as needed
- Frequent check-ins with supervisor for specific project support
- Participate in weekly all-office meetings
- Participate in bi-weekly supervisor/supervisee meetings with deputy director of operations, focused on implementing office expectations, self-reflection, and skill development
- Give and receive feedback on office operations
- Participate in biannual supervisor/supervisee performance evaluations and annual performance evaluations with principal and deputy director of operations
- Attend mandatory team professional development sessions
Salary
$60,000 to $70,000

Position is fully in-person at our office in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn.
